Marvelous Hair Jokes

I've been updating this new blog daily, just to jumpstart the content. I'll probably settle down into more of a twice weekly schedule. (I need time to work on a new comic project!) My first post involved leg shaving, so I thought it would be appropriate to end the daily posts with another one.

This is a page I did years ago. I can't remember if I submitted it to Marvel's "What If..." or "What the...?", but it never saw print and I never inked it. It's obviously still in pencil. I dropped in some flat color to add a bit to the clarity.

Btw, I'm a Tigra fan. Not ashamed of it. Nope.

Clever design or accident?

Recently, I noticed that the FedEx logo has an arrow in it! (I've colored it in yellow below.) I wondered if it's an intentionally placed icon of movement.

But if it is, what the heck does the stubby spoon mean?

Nice Pants!

A big THANK YOU to Comic Pants for their enthusiastic praise of Halo and Sprocket (blush) in their Podcast #53! They discuss humor in comics and is worth a listen to even if you're not a H&S fan.

(Btw, switching gears a bit, I really wish I could do away with the anemic version of my Halo and Sprocket: Vol. 1 cover. Graphic novels need cover images created sooner than regular comics to allow for early solicitation to bookstores. I had only a couple of days to create an image. The result is what is seen above. I then had time to refine the cover for the actual book, which is seen below. But alas, when an image makes it to the internet, it will be around forever...)

A Throne of Zombies

Today I’m sharing a pin-up I did for Gearhead #3, by Dennis Hopeless and Kevin Mellon. The comic mini-series came out in 2007, with the collection due out sometime this year.

The character is a sad man named Evil Ted. He has the unlikely power to create servant, zombie duplicates of himself. I thought this would be a good way to show it in one image.

The Truth about Superman

Okay, this is pretty old. I did it before I created Halo and Sprocket, just for fun. It’s never seen print. Click on the image below to read the whole thing.

Bat Devil?

If Marvel and DC ever create more Amalgam Comics (where they combine their characters) I think Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, should become Batman. He would be as blind as a bat and have a radar sense! I've taken the liberty of altering some David Mazzucchelli art below.

What should the character be called? Bat Devil? Devil Bat? Bat out of Hell? Bat Murdock? Hmmm, actually it might be cooler, if he just stayed regular Batman with his regular costume, but Murdock was in it.

Huge Dave Cockrum Sale!

I never know if I should feel responsible for the things I dream.

Dave Cockrum was, of course, one of the fertile minds behind the Uncanny X-men. He created many of its members, including Nightcrawler, who is one of my favorite Marvel characters. Mr. Cockrum sadly passed away in 2006.

I recently had a dream about a website that was advertising a huge "DAVE COCKRUM SALE!" I thought, “Cool. It might have something I want!”

After going to the website, I discovered the fine print read, "10% off everything, if you are Dave Cockrum."

Preview of Halo and Sprocket Vol. 2!

Hello. Welcome to Kerry Callen's blog. I’m the creator of the alternative comic, Halo and Sprocket. Even though it’s a book about life in general, I get a lot of ideas that don’t really fit in its pages. On this site, I’ll be sharing unpublished work, little seen work, random thoughts on life, and random thoughts about comic books in general.

But first, I’ll start with an eight page preview of the new, 72 page Halo and Sprocket, Vol.2: Natural Creatures, due to hit the stands this July. Available for order in MAY PREVIEWS from Amaze Ink/SLG Publishing (www.slgcomic.com). Read older H&S stories here.
