I want to change my dog's name, without him realizing it.

We have a cocker spaniel named Magoo. He smells like a corn chip (unless he's been freshly bathed). He's roughly the same color of a corn chip. I want to rename him Corn Chip.

He doesn't speak English very well, so I'm thinking I can do it without him knowing it. I would alter his name a tiny bit every month.

I believe this would also work with very young children.

A Blooper, Indeed.

I recently ran across this book, printed in 1969, The Dictionary of Bloopers & Boners.

Before you get the wrong idea around what the book is about, let me show you a couple of excerpts from the book's forward.

It goes on to examine how such things can occur.

In the body of the book, some of the entries have an accompanying cartoon.

It's a fun read highlighting misused words or ideas from various sources. The dedication page has a single statement on it...

A nice sentiment. It could only be better if it had a cartoon to go with it.

I have stupid dreams.

Last night I dreamt of a new TV show. It was a spin-off from two, old sit coms. It starred the goofy farmhand from Green Acres and the "kiss my grits" waitress from Alice. The show was titled Eb & Flo. (Of course.)

Not only is "ebb and flow" a phrase I rarely use, but if you were to ask me the names of these characters during my waking hours, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have been able to think of them.

What a great use of my subconscious mind.

SOrry.

I recently received an email from a friend who needed to cancel our lunch plans. It started with "SOrry." I thought he had created a clever way of saying, "So sorry." It turns out it was merely a typo.

Too bad. It would have been cool.

Your cooperation is appreciated

While in a bathroom at a medical facility, I noticed a small door for patients to pass along urine samples. I took a picture of it with my phone.

I think it's hilarious that the word "tightly" is underlined AND highlighted!

Is There a Hole in My Logic?

It's my understanding that an apostrophe stands in for a missing letter. The apostrophe in "it's" takes the place of the missing "i" in "it is". Ol' actually means "old", etc.

This means that the word "don't" could actually mean "donut"! Yum.

I wonder if I should open my own store using this cute way of spelling doughnut?

Hmm, probably not.

Tacky activity for the kids!

You will need a few items. (A.) Tide detergent box, (B.) white acrylic paint, and (C.) small paint brush.

Step #1: Apply the white paint onto your paint brush.

Step #2: Starting in the center of the "d," paint a small strip downward. Next, starting in the top center of the "e," paint a small stripe to the left.

Step #3:
Place finished piece in front of mirror.

Step #4: Giggle incessantly.

Halo and Sprocket Secrets: Snagglepuss!

Halo and Sprocket: Natural Creatures should be hitting the comic stores today, so it's time for me to start sharing some secrets....

When I do a Halo & Sprocket book, I like to throw in something non-H&S related, just for kicks. One of the things in this newest volume is BIG CAT PUNS. (The idea came to me in a dream, complete with the first panel involving the police lion!)

I always do small roughs of my pages before I draw the finishes. This means I usually know where the word balloons will fall. So, even though you wouldn't know it by looking the finished comic, I amused myself by adding in the Big Cat Snagglepuss..!

"TURSDAY" is a dangerous word

On a recent Monday, I got an urgent email stating that a rush piece of work "absolutely had to be completed by Tursday!"

My first assumption was that "Tursday" was "Thursday" mistyped. But then I realized that the "r" is right next the the "e" on a keyboard. "Tursday" might actually be "Tuesday" mistyped! I almost didn't check with the sender, feeling pretty confident that Thursday was the only reasonable deadline. (I also didn't want to look a like a petty jerk by pointing out spelling errors.) I did check however. It was due Tuesday!

I made the deadline. Just wanted to present this as a cautionary tale if anyone's ever in a similar boat...

Btw, I'm away from home (and my computer) most of this week, or else I'd have made some kind of pretty picture to go with this post...

A cliche I find funny

Yes, the punchline to this may be obvious, but for some reason , it cracks me up. I hate cliches and do my upmost to avoid them, but I couldn't stop myself in this instance.

A few years ago I took a rough from my sketchbook and created this one page strip for the Comiculture Anthology. Comiculture was a great magazine idea that never quite got off the ground. It was started by Steve Buccellato. (Steve, if you happen to read this... How you doing, Buddy?)

I did the strip in color, but unfortunately the finished product ended up in black and white. I've always liked it in color so I'm presenting it here.

(On a side note, Steve did a nice Halo and Sprocket pin-up for me years ago. I received it just as I was putting H&S on hiatus for a while, so I didn't use it in a printed book. I always felt bad about that. It was a nice piece. You can take a look at it here.)

Clever design or accident?

Recently, I noticed that the FedEx logo has an arrow in it! (I've colored it in yellow below.) I wondered if it's an intentionally placed icon of movement.

But if it is, what the heck does the stubby spoon mean?
