After reviewing Moore's proposal, DC asked him to create new characters for his story. So, Blue Beetle became Night Owl, The Question became Rorschach, and so forth...The reasoning behind it was to allow the Charlton characters to continue to be used, instead of destroyed. Things didn't turn out so good for Captain Atom (Dr. Manhattan) either. He's died several times, lost his mind, and last time I looked was lost somewhere between dimensions.
SPOILERS, I suppose.
Dr. Manhattan actually ends up in a happy place. Night Owl lives. And Rorschach gets an easy, instantaneous death.
All better fates than their counterparts.
Thank god I don't read mainstream comics anymore.
Don't fret, Kerry. They'll be back.
If Barry Allen can come back, anyone can come back.
