Hey! I just realized this image is a bit like these Superman gifs I did a several years ago.

Batman!!!

MAD #5 is on sale now! I have one piece included this month and thought it would be fun to share the uncropped image. Here's how my art appears in the issue--

And below is it my uncluttered art. (Well, I re-cluttered it a bit. I wanted to insure MAD is still represented.) The building color in the background has been changed. It probably blended in too much with the banner below.

I enjoyed drawing this particular Batman parody. Every time I've drawn him previously, it has been a riff on a specific era or established style. This is the first time I've created my interpretation of him. That was fun!

As I drew this, I started wondering, "Who was the first person to hide behind their own cape? "Dracula? The Shadow? Bull fighters? Is it a cliche from ancient times? Anybody out there know anything about it?

Inspired by gun dodging in the 1950's Superman series.

Superman and Batman. Who's better? Let's find out!

For decades, fans have argued who is the better superhero, Superman or Batman. It recently occurred to me that the best way to determine this is to see how they’d fare if one replaced the other on their comic covers. Will one fare better than the other? This should decide once and for all who's superior! I selected six covers and then created six alternative images.

First up, Superman #32. Superman is being hit by multiple lightning bolts--

--while Batman is screaming multiple obscenities. Winner, Superman.

Next, Action Comics #357, featuring kids with kryptonite. Looks like Superman is in loads of trouble--

--Batman, not so much. Punk kids. Winner, Batman.

Let's look at a fairly famous cover, Batman #497, where Bane broke Batman's back--

I always thought this Batman cover should have had a sound effect on it. Otherwise, it merely looks like a visit to the chiropractor. Regardless-- Winner, Superman.

Next, Detective Comics #583. Batman is cooler when he's surrounded by bats!

Superman is not cooler when surrounded by supers. Winner, Batman.

Two wins for Superman. Two wins for Batman. It's a close race! Let's take a look at a cover that has both heroes on it, World's Finest #54--

Now, let’s replace Batman with Superman and Superman with Batman.

It appears they are both equally as awesome! Suck it, Robin. Tie!

Lastly, Detective Comics Vol. 2 #37, the deciding image! Batman lives in a mansion and has a butler--

Winner, Batman!

It's amazing how well the images match up! Perhaps Warner Bros. should pay Scott McCloud to add the scene to future releases of the film.

The real story behind the cover of Action Comics #1 came to me in a dream. I, of course, had to draw it.

Yes, I know car alarms didn't exist in 1939. Don't ruin my fun.

 On this page, I tried to up the ante a bit in creating an old comic look. Not only did I misregister the color, but I also added a faint image of a reverse comic page, which would show through the newsprint. Yep. This is how I amuse myself.

Commie Superman!

I recently finished another Great Comics That Never Happened cover for Comics Alliance, written by Chris Sims. Check out the finished version (and plot!) on CA's site.

I really wanted to put Jimmy Olsen in his more-iconic green suit, but it just didn't look as good in the overall aesthetics of the cover. Here's my inks, just to make this post a little longer...
